Española Island
Here we are! In the Galápagos islands… this unique place untouched by time.
The fearless creatures that we saw today makes us think about the beginning of life in our planet.
Today we visited one of the oldest islands in Galápagos, Española. Early in the morning we disembarked at a place called Punta Suarez; as soon as we landed there we saw a high concentration of reptiles - they were the famous marine iguanas stretched all on the rocks absorbing and overheating with the equatorial sun before they go to the ocean floor to eat.
Right beside these reptilian creatures we observed a nice colony of sea lions and a couple of newborns only a few weeks old, exploring the beach and trying to catch some of the first toys that they found on the island: the crabs and the iguanas. I have seen these little sea lions many times following the iguanas and grabbing them by the tail and pulling them to the water - it is a great game for sea lions but I don’t think the iguanas enjoy it much.
Passing this colony of mammals we encountered different types of birds, some of them were the colorful blue-footed boobies. At the end of our walk we stopped in front of one of the biggest birds in Galápagos - it was the waved albatross. Our walk was very pleasant.
In the afternoon we anchored at the other side of Española Island and we concentrated on the water activities. Some of us had the chance to ride on the glass bottom boat and also go deep water snorkeling, where we saw a grand amount of fish, and sharks too.
After snorkeling, we ended up resting and enjoying the sunset in a beautiful beach with sand surrounded by sea lions.
It was an excellent day.
