Isla San Marcos
We were surprised last night of the strong wind and waves coming from the west as we wanted to head north. In the middle of the night, with much ship motion, we changed direction, and sunlight found us in the vicinity of Isla San Marcos, our day’s destination.
After we dropped the anchor, we all went down to the dining room for a rewarding breakfast after the long night.
For the morning activities, the options were all on land. The natural history staff offered three kinds of walks into the island, a short, a medium and a long hike, all three, going up the same arroyo, finding very interesting plants, some of them still in bloom or at least green. We saw turkey vultures, osprey, great blue herons, red-tailed hawk, costa´s hummingbirds, common ravens and much more.
For the afternoon, wanting to offer water activities, we moved a little bit south into a more protected bay. There, we had our first opportunity to use the fleet of kayaks from the Sea Bird, we offered two rounds of kayaking, then the chance for those interested to take a Zodiac along the shoreline of San Marcos island. We had a group of three to five bottlenose dolphins that stayed for at least two hours in close vicinity of the ship and the cruisers, and a couple of guests in one of the kayaks had really close views of them.
Now, under the protection of a clear sky and thousands of bright stars, we will move to our next day of adventures.
