Bahia Salinas at Isla del Carmen & Isla Santa Catalina
What was your first introduction to a desert? Was it a cartoon of a coyote perpetually chasing a purple and blue roadrunner across saguaro studded mesas? Or was it an image in a book, perhaps of the Sahara, with endless dunes and not a plant in sight? Could you have ever imagined the desert we have explored this past week? A place of cardon forests, sculptured canyons, blossom-eating iguanas, and ragged mountains fringed by a sea sprinkled with whales and dolphins.
We exercised more than our imaginations this morning, against the backdrop of the abandoned town of Salinas on Isla del Carmen - our Captain sighted killer whales! Now it was time for the real aerobics. While these animals appeared to be feeding all around us, we performed “killer whale calisthenics.” Rushing to the port side, stringing out on the starboard side, leaning and stretching over the bow, quick, back to the stern, now full circle and here we go again! A satisfied exhaustion was felt by all after two hours of this workout.
Some of our younger travelers this week have shared with us their impressions of this diverse region called the Sonoran desert. They have glimpsed the hidden gems of a parched land bordered by a vibrant sea, and hopefully will be returning home with a different impression of how truly splendid a desert can be.
What a magnificient
Humpback, fluking
Around our ship
Looking for another species
Enjoying all the
Sights we see.
Anna Main, Age 10
Orca
A playful killer
Hunts all; Never hunted
Feared by all down under the sea
Sea Wolf
Tim Morris, Age 14
Ocean
Flowing with knowledge
Swirling with waves of mirth
Home to fish and creatures galore
Seashore
Megan Morris, Age 12
