Floreana Island

Today we started our activities early in the morning; we visited the famous post office barrel. After telling the interesting story about the whalers that came to this place, many of our guests took some of the postcards left by other visitors, and will deliver them hand to hand, becoming in that way part of the old whaling tradition.

Later in the morning we anchored close to Champion islet, which is a small volcanic cone offshore of Floreana Island. In this place we offered our guests a variety of activities: snorkeling, glass bottom boating and a Zodiac ride. We all enjoyed very much all the options. The ocean today was very calm and the water very clear, the snorkelers had a wonderful time watching all the different varieties of fish, sea lions and white tipped sharks. The favorites this morning were the Galápagos sea lions. There were many young sea lions playing in the water among themselves and also with swimmers. Our guests had a magnificent experience snorkeling with sea lions.

Later in the afternoon, we visited Punta Cormorant, which is part of Floreana Island. Floreana is 67 square miles and has many volcanic cones that show that the island was very active in the past. Right behind the beach there is a big breakwater lagoon. The highlights this afternoon were the flamingos. Many flamingos were either eating or just resting in this shallow pond. What really brought to our attention was the very bright pink color they had. After this sighting we had a very interesting walk from one side of the isthmus to the other. During the walk we learnt about the different plants that grow in this area and finally arrived to a lovely coralline sand beach. The sand dune right next to the beach is a very important nesting site for the green turtles. This afternoon we saw many nests and a few fresh turtle trails. We also observed a few green turtles swimming in the water, sharks and rays. The beauty of this place is hard to explain with words, but we all came back on board with new memories and feelings that will stay forever in our hearts.
