Cabeza Mechudo & Puerto Gato

The water is sapphires,
The light is of gold,
The beauty around me
has treasures untold.

Soley Hyman, age 10

For some, it may be hard to express the splendor of the natural world with words on a page. An image can seemingly express so much more, reducing the written word to verbal mediocrity. However, a few well-crafted lines with carefully selected words can enhance and set the mood for our day, and such is the case with the short poem above shared by Soley Hyman.

Inspiration enveloped everyone this morning; a green flash at sunrise, multicolored layers of the Baja California peninsula at Cabeza Mechudo reflected in the soft morning light, a feeding frenzy of pelicans, cormorants, gulls and frigate birds joined by a humpback whale, the briefest glimpse of a Bryde’s whale, a playful sea lion in the mix, and a blue whale on the periphery. All of this and it was still another 20 minutes before breakfast was going to be ready!

The dolphin feeding frenzy we saved until after breakfast, and then it was on to our afternoon’s landing at Puerto Gato, where inspiration struck again.

The rings in the rocks are the wrinkles of foreheads.

Rounded sandstone dunes tinted in setting sun oranges and reds invited us to scamper about with out tripods and capture their eroded contortions. Some probed further into the cactus-studded desert while others strolled the shell lined beach and its bordering dunes. Our day ended with a stunning sunset outlining the ragged edges of the Sierra de la Gigante. A full day described with words on a page. To do justice to this spectacle, you need to join us, come to Baja California and we will share with you the sights of our inspiration.
