Santa Cruz Island

Today we had a real experience of the Galapagos hot season. Early in the morning we walked along in the humid heat and the completely clear sky of the Charles Darwin Research Station, and as we saw the tortoises we were transported to a different world. They looked at us like we were part of their life, and their food. They have seen ages passing, and they said nothing. They saw us passing too. They said nothing. Little we knew that in the afternoon we would enjoy the thickest rain of the whole season, concentrated in fifteen minutes. In the highlands, tortoises, as well as caws and the absolute rest of the island were in ecstasy by the presence of the water. It is a very special thing this tropical rain; you have to feel the warmth of the water and the refreshing of the atmosphere. That no other place would be equal might be an exaggeration, but I have never seen so many smiling faces under the rain before.

The picture shows one of the morning tortoises knowing but not telling.
