Magdalena Bay
Everywhere we look there are examples of art and beauty in nature. Today we saw how the wind can sculpt the landscape. Walking the dunes on Isla Magdalena in the late afternoon, many contrasting patterns, textures and shapes were apparent, on both large and small scales. A few species of plants manage to survive temporarily in the sand, but like the dunes themselves, they are ephemeral. Creatures from beetles to coyotes eke out a living in this stark environment. This is a dynamic place, ever shifting and migrating according to the strength and direction of the wind. Saltating grains of sand are continuously sorted by size, creating lovely patterns, organized yet random at the same time. There is both conformity and uniqueness here. Many different moods are allowed to emerge. This place accommodates wonder, curiosity, meditation, fantasy and play. There is no end to the subject matter for photographers and artists. It is one of many "worlds" this planet has to offer. Tomorrow there will be no trace of our brief visit, but our enjoyment will have a lasting effect.
