Bartholome and Santiago Islands
Today we had an early start on Bartholome Island, which is an "open book" for geology. We climbed to the summit of one of the two main volcanic cones of this incredible place. We admired the beauty of the area all around us, especially Pinacle Rock and many of the lava formations.
After our walk we went on shore to enjoy water activities and different options, among them we went on the glass bottom boat and we encountered white-tipped reef sharks and lots of fish. Some guests stayed for snorkeling and swam with Galapagos penguins, which is a unique experience.
Our morning still had some surprises saved for us, because we took a short walk over a dune to find green sea turtles, brown pelicans, Galapagos penguins, and blue-footed boobies. Also, we found this scene when these semi-terrestrial hermit crabs were fighting for the same shell. This is probably the most dangerous moment in their lives. They become vulnerable to predators if they are not able to move into a larger shell and have to stay with the old one. This particular hermit crab succeeded as soon as it left its old shell, and as a consequence, another crab took it.
After a great morning we went to James Island where we had wonderful snorkeling and a very pleasant walk. We found there some migratory birds, Galapagos fur seals and Galapagos hawks. We had a nice day and a lovely sunset to end our week here in Galapagos.
