The town of Ketchikan is a destination for many varieties of migratory animals. Pink salmon arrive annually in large numbers and were observed in Ketchikan Creek heading upstream to spawn. Bears and eagles follow in pursuit of the salmon and are usually seen in the outskirts of town in the spawning areas. Guests from the Sea Bird also arrived on our own migratory journey of exploration. When we arrived at the dock, we were surrounded by leaping salmon.
We began our day's activities with a tour of Saxman Totem Park and the Totem Heritage Center. Later, we too followed the migration upstream along the Ketchikan Creek boardwalk. We admired the quaint historic buildings and their contents, and wondered about the salmon that soon would spawn and die. Having spent ourselves in a frenzy of activities, we shifted back to the Sea Bird and continued southwards into Canada on our continuing odyssey.
