Early morning’s glowering gray clouds parted and areas of blue sky illuminated the picturesque town of Petersburg as the Sea Bird joined the many colorful fishing boats at the city dock. Whether exploring and photographing the hidden corners of town, viewing LeConte glacier from a small floatplane or hiking through beautiful forest and muskeg strewn with delicate wildflowers, this morning’s adventures were certainly memorable.
Petersburg is located on Mitkof Island near the north end of Wrangell Narrows, a 24 mile long waterway known for it’s strong currents and numerous aids to navigation. The town was founded by one of Norway’s sons, Peter Thams Buschmann when he built a cannery and sawmill on the townsite in 1899.
Calm seas and warm weather made our afternoon’s cruise through Frederick Sound perfect. Several young Stellar sea lions cavorted near the bow and one threw a fish into the air while a juvenile gull attempted to steal a bit of sushi. A few single humpback whales surfaced, their blows hanging in the still air. Near the Five Finger Islands lighthouse, we had our first close looks at these huge mammals that bring us such delight. We played at photographing the flukes of these individuals and contemplated the wonder of their mysterious lives.
