Petersburg
The town of Petersburg is a real Alaskan fishing town just waking up to its future visitors’ possibilities. This has kept the nature of this working town very real for those who do make the visit. When the Sea Bird is in town we are one of the largest vessels tied up, except for maybe one of Alaskan State ferry boats. Once we had arrived in the morning there were a few options for exploring. The most popular was a boardwalk hike, pictured, along the Petersburg Creek trail. This state park has a very accessible trail along, old growth, second growth and a muskeg environment. The muskeg area is quite amazing with its stunted trees and strange assortment of carnivorous plants and weirdly adapted bog botany. The birds were taking advantage of the open area, as we saw eagles, thrushes, and red breasted sapsuckers. Some of us enjoyed flight seeing over the Le Conte Glacier area to view the inspiring sight of calving ice and iceberg armadas.

After lunch the ship made her way over to the aforementioned bay and organized a walk along an ice filled shore, an excellent vista for photography. Along the walk the past presence of wolves was found as well as other signs of life. The walking was fairly good in our rubber boots as we made our way along the strange boundary between ice and life along the shore. The ice patterns were incredible either by foot or Zodiac. The skies were gray but the blue ice was a highlight of the trip so far.
