Los Islotes

After an excellent view of the green flash at sunrise, it was time to anchor the Sea Bird by a small island called Los Islotes. Those venturing into the aquatic world were rewarded with great views of inquisitive California sea lions taking part in an underwater ballet. Later all of us took Zodiacs along the shoreline for great views of these photogenic pinnipeds. Along with the sea lions we had close up views of several species of birds including this one, the endemic yellow-footed gull. This handsome gull has a very limited range and is usually found only in the Sea of Cortez and no where else in the world. Even though the peninsula is very narrow, as is the Sea of Cortez, for whatever reason this species has decided on a very limited area to call it’s range.

After a splendid morning at Los Islotes it was off to Espiritu Santos for hiking and kayaking. Along the way lunch was interrupted with another marine mammal sighting and we all rushed to the decks for some good views of a cow/calf fin whale pair. What a great way to end our expedition. From gray whales to fin whales it has truly been an adventure.
