Isla Del Carmen and Isla Santa Catalina
At dawn this morning we discovered some rabbit tracks and pellets near our landing on Isla del Carmen. Then rustling was heard in the bushes and, as we started down Arroyo Rojo, our suspicions were confirmed as we discovered bright Easter eggs along the trail. He must have just been a few hops ahead of us.
What a beautiful morning. The sea was a perfect mirror of bright sunrise colors and a fresh breeze greeted us on shore with the sweet scent of the desert. The season’s wealth of rainfall was displayed by flowers in bloom and shrubs and trees with fresh green leaves. We strolled leisurely up the arroyo, shaded nicely by the canyon’s steep red walls.
After feasting on Easter brunch, the ship cruised amongst several fin whales and then found a large pod of common dolphins. We relaxed on the bow, watching the creatures moving as gently and easily.
Later in the day we anchored near Elephant Rock on Isla Santa Catalina. This elephant wades toward shore amidst numerous colorful fish and snorkelers willing to brave the cold waters. Ashore, we walked amongst Santa Catalina’s enormous cacti and the photographers set up their tripods to capture the soft sunset colors of the sea and sky.
