Bahia Magdalena
We awoke this morning to perfect conditions for our final rounds of Zodiac excursions amongst the gray whales. No wind and a clear sky made for some spectacular observations. We were quickly surrounded by whales, including mating groups and mom and calf pairs. With the glassy water, many photos were taken of the mirror like reflections of breaching juveniles, aggressive adults, and inquisitive calves. It was such a treat to be able to spend two days at the Boca de Soledad, such an incredible place filled with gray whales. A curious calf slowly lifting its eye above the water will forever be etched in my memory. Was it as happy looking at us as we were looking at it?
Our final afternoon was spent exploring the sand dunes and extensive beach of Santa Maria bay. Shell middens, sand dollars and various marine mammal bones were some of the treasures we discovered. Many of us happily strolled on the miles of unspoiled beach while others went for a refreshing swim in the Pacific. As the sun dipped towards the horizon, our younger guests joined a rousing game of dune jumping. Many launched themselves into the air with twists and turns, imitating the whales we have come to love on this voyage.
