This is the beginning of winter for the Hells Canyon Area. The guests and naturalists of the Sea Bird were treated to a variety of special events in Hells Canyon today. We woke to fresh snow on the hills around the Snake River below Clarkston, Washington. A group of Trumpeter Swans were seen heading downriver. We prepared for the canyon trip with 2 videos that explained the formation of the Canyon, as well as other geologic events that helped to shape this region. Once we began our excursion the sun played with us by spotlighting the steep canyon walls. Excellent views of Bighorn Sheep, Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, Native American pictographs and snow-covered peaks followed one another through the day. All of us marveled at the spectacular formations and rugged features of the canyons while we cruised through in the comfort and warmth of the heated jet boats. Whenever we spotted wildlife, we ventured to the stern of the boats wrapped in warm coats, hats and gloves for an even better view of the tremendous canyon walls and a breath of brisk autumn air.
