Pavlof Harbor, Chichagof Island
How do we out-do a day like we had yesterday at Glacier Bay? I didn’t think it was possible but this morning we woke up to a crisp, bright, Alaskan blue sky and humpback whales at our bow. As a handful of us were on the aft part of the ship doing some morning stretches we could barley keep focused and on our mats because of the amazing blows of the humpbacks right next to us! We couldn’t have asked for a better way to start our day.
Our first outing began right after breakfast on Chichagof Island in a place called Pavlof Harbor. We were all little explorers this morning because there are absolutely no trails to hike on. Some of us took a leisurely stroll, others of us walked along the salmon stream up to a waterfall, and the rest of us without doubt had an adventure of our own. We made our own trail in the deep forest, stepping in boot-sucking mud, ducking under branches, getting caught in bushes, trying to stay away from the Devil’s club, all the while calling out to the bears to let them know we were there. This adventure of ours led us to a beautiful muskeg with lots of interesting vegetation and then down to a lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains and luscious evergreen trees! The bush whacking was worth every minute!
After lunch the adventure continued in a place called Basket Bay. This is a place we don’t often get to visit because the tides have to be just perfect, and luckily today they were! Here in Basket Bay there is a little cove that we like to call The Grotto. When the Zodiacs make their way back in there you feel like you just sailed into a different, magical world. It’s an enchanting place that almost takes your breath away with the lush green of the trees and the sparkling water below.
As we sailed on for the rest of the early evening it was great to relax and just take in the gorgeous sun shining on the mountains and the water, breathe in the fresh air and think about the day that you’ve just experienced in Southeast Alaska.
