Sand Dollar Beach, Isla Magdalena, Baja California Sur, México

By sunrise, we were already off the western coast of Isla Margarita, the southern limit of Bahia Magdalena. Besides some shrimp trawlers, there were many small fishing boats in the area. By the time we had finished breakfast, we were already in the mouth of the bay, called “La Entrada”. A good number of humpback whales were seen here, in the very close proximity of our ship, the M.V Sea Lion. These we watched for a while, as well as a good number of species of sea birds.

Already in the bay, we slowly went by the old whaling station called Point Belcher, used today by many fishermen as a base camp. On we went, and saw a very small community named “Puerto Magdalena”, and after lunch were already at our afternoon’s hike location. We immediately got to the beach on the Zodiacs, and hiked across the island over sand dunes to the open Pacific bay of Santa Maria. Off in the distance, on the beach to the North was a dead female pilot whale. Many shells were seen as well as turtle carapaces and the skull of a bottlenose dolphin. The walk back made our blood circulate again.
