It has been a busy morning beginning with a beautiful sunrise complete with a brilliant green flash coloring the rim of the sun's disc as it rose out of the tranquil Sea of Cortez. Then on the not too distant horizon we spotted an aggregation of birds and below them splashes that suggested leaping dolphins. Moving closer we confirmed our suspicions and found ourselves in the midst of a large group of common dolphins with accompanying aerialists: blue-footed and brown boobies, brown pelicans, red-billed tropic birds, yellow-footed gulls and black-vented shearwaters. The entire group seemed excited and busy feeding on small fish in the area. Not so busy, however, that the dolphins couldn't take a few moments to come and ride the pressure wave of our bow, as seen pictured here. Several hundred common dolphins in the area included at least several pairs of adult females and their calves. Later this same morning we encountered bottlenose dolphins, a blue whale and a fin whale, all within a few miles of where we began with a green flash sunrise.
