The Finis Terra (Land's End) seen from the Sea Lion

These impressive granitic blocks, also known as Friar's Rock, form the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Here we begin our adventure in the Sea of Cortez not far from an important area of underwater sea mounts and deep sea canyons. These conditions create a fine environment for sea lions, fish, marine invertebrates, sea birds and most importantly humpback whales.

This is one of the most impressive and well-known landscapes of Baja California Sur. When approached from the ocean an extra dimension is revealed to the traveler, with the "barking" of the sea lions and the changing colors of the granitic rocks, estimated at an age of 100 million years. The processes and mechanisms of how the peninsula has reached its present position are under study. It is thought that once it was attached to the Mexican mainland somewhere in the state of Jalisco.
