Bahia Magdalena and Hull Canal

After an early morning treasure hunt in Magdalena Bay, we pulled up anchor headed south. The fog had cleared and the sun shone on the mirror-like water. The sand dunes and the ripples on the water were the only division between the matching brilliant blue colors of the water and the sky. In the southern part of the bay, we discovered the secret of where the gray whale cows and calves were this morning. In just over an hour, we passed nine cow calf pairs! The stillness of the air made the spray from the blows easy to see at great distances. One of our favorites was the “tiny” (1500 – 2000 lb) calf lying across and then rolling off of its mother’s back as she hung near the surface.

Our afternoon began with feeding. The cormorants, pelicans and terns dove through the clear water for their fish feed while we dove into the barbecue that was available on the bridge deck.

We ended our afternoon with a peaceful cruise among the mangroves. Our choice of cruise “vehicles” was up to us. Some of us chose the solitude of sea kayaking while others opted for one more Zodiac cruise. We were rewarded with calm waters, views of the highly adapted mangroves, and a variety of birds. Perhaps the best reward was the chance to float quietly for a few minutes and enjoy the peacefulness we have come to know in Baja and have found again in ourselves.
