Golfo Dulce
After our fourth day of this wonderful trip, we arrived at our first destination in my beautiful native country, Costa Rica. One of the most remarkable sites of Golfo Dulce is Casa Orquideas, a place that was created as a result of the efforts of a dedicated and interesting couple, Ron and Trudy MacAllister. Nearly 30 years ago, these two Americans fell in love with Costa Rica and its tropical beauty and decided to stay. They settled along the shores of Golfo Dulce where they created a very beautiful and unique botanical garden with lots of native and exotic plants and trees. There, one can find herbs like peppermint, lemon grass, oregano, and the famous achiote and also fruit producing trees like mango, papaya, oranges, and bananas. This environment is an “Eden” to very many kinds of birds like Chestnut-mandible Toucan, Sherrie’s Tanager, and Great Kiskadee among others.
Later in the afternoon, we headed towards our final destination of the day, the mangrove forest of Rio Rincon, located near Puerto Jimenez, the biggest town in the area. In this magical site we enjoyed walking, kayaking and exploring by Zodiac. After a little bit of exercise we stopped in a local cantina to cool off with a cold beverage that was very pleasing. The highlights of the day were the sloths right above our heads. They were actually moving, eating leaves and of course staring at the humans below them on the Zodiacs and kayaks.
Toucans, sloths, orchids, heliconias, pineapples, cacao, and of course the achiote were part of the excitement of the day, but the rewarding part for the staff and crew members was seeing all these happy faces coming back on board.
