Corcovado National Park, Osa Peninsula
Our second day of the trip and the last day of the year 2007, and we chose to visit the Osa Penisula of Costa Rica to welcome the new year. So what better way than enjoying nice tropical weather and a beautiful beach for the last day of the year?
But not any beach! This is one in which monkeys come all the way to the beach because the tropical forest comes down from the mountain to literally meet the ocean. And we had living proof of this in our morning outing to the a beach known as San Josecito. We were welcomed right at the landing by a troop of white-faced capuchin monkeys in close range, but those was not the only animals sharing the place with us; as we soon realized through the hikes and horseback riding that some of us took in the morning, the place had a lot to offer on top of the beautiful beach and nice scenery. Scarlet macaws, chestnut mandible toucans, violaceous trogons, white nosed coatis and even a great look of a yellow bellied sea snake were seen by many.
This area has been kept pristine thanks to being so far from the capital and any other mayor city of the country, as well as its difficult access. The only way to come here is by small plane and then by a boat ride of three hours! The cove of San Josecito has also been declared protected by the National Parks and reserves. Of all these places Corcovado National Park is the most well known and probably one of the wildest places on the face of this planet. It is one of those tropical forests in which you can still see jaguars and tapirs and big forest mammals dueling in the place, and our destination for the afternoon!.
So after our morning outing and beach time we picked up the anchor and sailed to one of the ranger stations in the park for some afternoon hikes in Corcovado’s beautiful old growth tropical forest. There, we were able to see howler monkeys, spider monkeys, tiger herons, great curassows and a beautiful waterfall among other things.
Not bad for the last day of the year, huh!
