Curu Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica

Today, after a six o’clock wake up call, we began our last day of the expedition. In the morning we visited Manuel Antonio National Park, and encountered a variety of birds, frogs, monkeys and sloths. Later, we saw some spotted dolphins, as we navigated to Curu.

Curu is an ecological jewel. It is an important repository for animals and plants of the tropical dry forest that have disappeared from their former ranges because of deforestation in this part of the country. Here in Curu the Shutt family has been running a reintroduction program for macaws, howler monkeys and spider monkeys that had originally been taken out of the forest to become household pets. When people finally realize that they do not make ideal pets, they try to get rid of them.

In this picture we see a spider monkey disinterested in going back to the forest. She seems to like the picnic tables and beach towels at our landing site better then the hard life in a tropical forest.
