Golfo Dulce

Orchids, ferns, bromeliads, gingers, and many other plants plus hummingbirds, toucans, honeycreepers, and woodpeckers. That’s how we started this morning at Casa Orquideas Botanical Garden. This is definitely one of the most beautiful places to see plants and birdwatch at the same time.

In the afternoon, we had a great time at Cano Blanca beach, kayaking and hiking through the tropical humid forest. Here we saw one of the most interesting aspects of this ecosystem.

In the picture we see the vegetative fruit of a fungus coming out of a rotten tree. Fungi and bacteria are saprophytes. They are extremely important organisms because they digest all the dead organic matter of the forest and break it in to the nutrients the forest requires. Without them this dead matter would take a longer time to decay. In other words, they are in charge of recycling most of the energy of this forest.
