Tortugero, Costa Rica
Today we began our Odyssey in a new country, the peace-loving nation of Costa Rica. We docked early at the port of Moin and disembarked the ship after breakfast, bound for the Tortugero Canals. We took a one-hour bus ride through acres and acres of banana plantations, before arriving at a canal side boat launch where we were greeted by a local marimba band and plenty of fresh fruit.
We boarded the canal boats and we all thoroughly enjoyed a two-hour cruise through the network of canals and rivers that criss-cross this coastal plain. We enjoyed great views of riverine forest with good sightings of many birds, Mantled Howler monkeys and numerous sloths – both two-toed and three-toed.
Pictured we have a two-toed sloth who was right at eye-level to the boats as we were close to the end of our cruise. Indeed some could be heard saying “oh no, not another sloth!”
We reboarded the Sea Voyager and soon thereafter set sail for our next destination, Nicaragua. As we cruised we enjoyed a lecture by Richard Cahill on “the raising of the isthmus” and we raised our glasses to another fun-filled day on our Odyssey.
