Casa Orquideas and Rio Rincon

Ready for a full day of wildlife search! Yes, we entered the Peninsula de Osa and we definitely started to discover the marvels of the tropical rainforest. This morning found us in Golfo Dulce, where Casa Orquideas botanical garden was our expedition paradise for those who love plants. Orchids, edible fruit trees, philodendrums, diffenbachias and many other ornamental plants showed us the beauty of Mother Nature. And for the bird lovers there was a lot to see around too, attracted by the extravaganza of blooms. We enjoyed our first sightings of the spectacular scarlet macaw as well as many other species that confirmed our birds list or helped us to increase it. There was an attraction for everyone and photographers certainly did use their rolls of film!

Our afternoon was perfect! While we were sailing to Rio Rincon we had a fantastic close up encounter with the always-playful pantropical spotted dolphins. But that was just an appetizer. Few minutes later, two humpback whales, a mother and calf, were surfacing by us for at least 20 minutes, and the photographers were very active again.

Our exploration of the area then proceeded with Zodiac cruises through the mangroves at Rincon de Osa, and we continued to add species of birds to our list: white ibis, northern jacanas, chestnut-mandibled toucans, yellow-billed cotingas and again the colorful slaty-tailed trogon to mention just a few of them.

At the end of the day we had a better idea of why Panama and Costa Rica have so much to offer to nature lovers.
