Corcovado National Park: Land Giants

The south pacific of Costa Rica always holds great surprises for nature lovers, great quantities of bird and others species not found anywhere else. There is no better place in the above-mentioned area to look for these species than Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula. This is because besides finding a lot of species exclusive to the area, you are also surrounded by one of the most incredible jungles of Costa Rica and the tropics of America. It is shocking to find a tree 5 foot in diameter that would normally measure just 20 inches, and amongst them fiery-billed aracaris, golden-naped woodpeckers, black-cheeked ant-tanagers and tawny-winged woodcreepers. An exploratory walk in this area constitutes an odyssey through a land of giants in which the caretakers are the monkeys, coatis, agoutis and the 12-foot bushmaster viper that inhabits the Osa Peninsula.

Today we began our trip to the park fighting enormous waves, our Zodiac drivers mastered the waves making us feel comfortable rather than afraid so we could enjoy the surfing. The walks departed, and as we got deeper into the woods we started spotting monkeys, scarlet macaws, coatis and of course big trees. Some ended the walk with a refreshing swim in a jungle creek. The walks were different lengths and led though different places, but all of us, on every walk, witnessed the blooming of the most beautiful flower of the jungle: the passion flower (Passiflora vitifolia).
