Cayos Holandeses, San Blas Islands, Panama

A day in Kuna Yala! Throughout the night we transited to Cayos Holandeses, a group of islands in the San Blas Archipelago that is home to the Kuna Indians of Panama. The Kuna fled here centuries ago from the Spaniards when they began colonizing the Darien region. The Kuna are unique as an indigenous culture as they gained independence from Panama and are self governing.

Today many of us shopped for molas – a unique style of fabric and stitching, while the rest of us enjoyed beach combing, snorkeling, Scuba diving, and kayaking. A couple of the children from our group are seen here snorkeling among the coral reefs with brown chomis. Members of the damselfish family, these plankton feeders are common here and are often found swimming in loose aggregations.

After dinner we were treated to a variety of activities, including; a bonfire ashore, reef sharks and Atlantic spotted dolphins feeding off the stern of the Sea Voyager. We also dropped the Splash Cam into the water to get a live feed of the “goings on” beneath us.
