Bona and Otoque Island
Early in the morning we sail towards Otoque island after passing the night anchored close to Flamengo Island. After two hours sailing, we arrived to Otoque Island. Here the brown pelicans, boobies and frigatebirds were already having breakfast while we were getting ready to have ours. During this moment, we began to question what to do first. Either going kayaking or take the Zodiac cruise. It was a very beautiful morning and the staff divided us in groups so that everybody could do both activities.
The Pacific Ocean was inviting every body to take a kayak and experience the emotion that that pelican have while they are swimming looking for something to eat. Many challenging the currents returned excited because it was their first time and they had a wonderful experience getting splash by their partner. While those who went on the Zodiac cruise came back commenting how cute the baby boobies and frigatebirds looked. There were some male frigatebirds showing their sexual disposal that was so notorious from a distance. The blue-footed boobies caring for their chick gave us a chance to see them feeding them. Bona Island, now a paradise for these amazing birds, used to be an important island in which the guano of these birds was collected to be used as fertilizer. Now it’s one of the best nesting places for the magnificent Frigatebird, the brown boobies and the brown pelican.
After a spectacular morning, we lifted anchor and began sailing to our next destination, Coiba Island. On the way, we received a vital briefing in how to snorkel and on what type of marine life we were going to see over there. With all this information, we spent the rest of the day looking for whales and dolphins while the sun began to say “Farewell, I’ll see you early tomorrow!”
