It was a glorious first day aboard National Geographic Sea Lion. I took to the bow at 6:30 a.m., well after dawn, where early-bird guests and staff had already spotted wildlife in the pale morning light. More creatures graced us with their presence throughout the morning as Sitka black-tailed deer and humpback whales could be seen mere yards from one another along the steep shorelines of the Alaskan coast.

The afternoon took us to Lake Eva, where varied thrushes sang their hearts out in the canopy and banana slugs cruised along the forest floor. Signs of bears (feces, tracks, and tufts of fur) were omnipresent.
