“Two hands, no waiting.” A quote from the day. What does this mean? Well, first I have to explain a little about our time here in Magdalena Bay. We have spent the last two days in the realm of the gray whale. For most of our time, we have been surrounded by whales. Mostly mothers and calves, we have spent hours being amongst them, and seeing the different behaviors. Breaching, traveling, lots of rolling over, and spy hopping were all observed and photographed. But the ultimate, is when the whales become a bit curious.
We don’t really understand why they do it, but some whales approach our boats. To me, this is one of the ultimate wildlife experiences. Mother and calf gray whales play with us and our boats, at times seeking our physical contact. We jump from side to side in the boats, trying to keep up with the agile whales. Some of the whales allow us to rub them, and we all climb on top of each other for the ability to interact with the whales in such a personal way. The whales come to us, and everyone involved seems to get a lot of pleasure from this interaction.
As one whale decided to swim away, a shout went out from one very happy guest. “Two hands, no waiting.” Obviously, we all wanted more, and luckily the whales were happy to oblige.
