This morning, National Geographic Resolution cruised into the spectacular fjord of Melfjorden on a rare bluebird-sky day. This 21-mile-long fjord has two arms, and we spent the morning in the north arm (Nordfjorden). With perfectly calm, sunny conditions, we took the opportunity to launch the kayaks. Seals entertained the kayakers as they paddled the pristine waters, and the occasional Eurasian oystercatcher ran around on the rocks looking for bivalves.

Those not interested in kayaking spent their morning on shore and went on either a strenuous walk or joined a birding or photo-centric sojourn. Exploring the beautiful birch forest, moist meadows, and the intertidal area, the walkers found lots of interesting things to photograph and discuss.

Returning to the ship, we were treated to an outdoor BBQ and an incredible assortment of donuts for dessert. As we started heading out of the fjord, we made one last stop at an incredible waterfall and Captain Martin nimbly positioned the ship just feet from the falling water.

After dinner, we visited the small island of Traena and were able to stretch our legs, check out the monument to the Arctic Circle, and hear a history talk in the church. It was another epic day along this fabulous fjord-indented coast!
