Santorini, Saint Irene, Strongyli, Thera, whatever you want to call it...it all added up to a glorious day of exploration into ancient history. Starting with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, our expert guides took us through a timeline of antiquity that focused on the magnificent frescos unearthed at Akrotiri. Brilliantly colored paintings depicting saffron gathering, naval celebrations, and blue monkeys are worthy of adorning the walls of your home today. Our visit to the excavation of Akrotiri showed us the exact buildings and rooms these frescos came from. Further along in our morning, we moseyed through the small village of Megalochori seeking quiet, blue domes, gelato, and photographic opportunities. The younger travelers had a scavenger hunt and sought out monkeys, dolphins, and three different edible fruits.

The morning turned into afternoon, and we tasted the fruits of the island and drank in the expansive, stunning views of the inner caldera with a wine tasting at Santo Winery. Back on board the Sea Cloud, we headed north into a Meltemi wind with our seaworthy ship cutting through waves and whitecaps as we headed for our adventures in Amorgas tomorrow.
