We are making excellent progress towards South Georgia in fairly calm conditions in the Scotia Sea. Days at sea are a great time to catch up on sorting through the hundreds of photos of penguins, whales and icebergs during our exciting time in Antarctica.

We also heard several excellent presentations throughout the day. Gabriela Roldan de Carey told us more about Sir Ernest Shackleton’s epic expedition to get us ready for our time in South Georgia. We learned more about South Georgia’s penguins from Santiago Imberti. Expedition Leader Lisa Kelley gave us a briefing and we decontaminated our gear once again to make sure not to transport any seeds to South Georgia.

Then the hotel manager and galley staff prepared a special “behind the scenes” tea for us later in the afternoon. We had a chance to see the laundry room and see what it takes to keep us all in fresh sheets and towels while sampling delicious goodies!

After tea we approached the island of South Georgia and sailed into Drygalski Fjord. The captain took us up to the end of the 14-kilometer-long fjord. At the end we marveled at the Risting and Jenkins Glacier as several hundreds of cape petrels, giant petrels and kelp gulls were feeding along the edge.

It was a great beginning and everyone is excited for our first landing on South Georgia tomorrow!
