After a calm night of motor sailing southwards, we awoke on a sunny morning in the western Cycladic Islands with a 15-knot breeze from the north. The Chief Mate began our day’s program with a narration of the process of putting up the sails aboard Sea Cloud as sailors “hit the rig” above our heads. After raising nearly all the sails of the ship, guests were invited to visit the ship’s fo’c’sle for a view of the Sea Cloud under sail and for a photo-opportunity. The ship reached a solid speed of 6.4 knots as we sailed to the west of Santorini. Captain Sergey provided guests with a “Captain’s Talk” about the weather, sail plans, routing, and life aboard the ship.
After our first fantastic Sea Cloud buffet lunch, many guests relaxed on deck or participated in a Mediterranean siesta. Later, the ship’s doctor conducted the physical audit of guests who might later climb the bowsprit and foremast. The ship arrived at anchor in midafternoon, just south of Santorini. National Geographic Certified Photographer Linda Burback gave her helpful presentation, “Smart Phone Photography.”
