Sailing towards South Georgia

Excitement is contagious! As one guest commented at the Captain’s Welcome Cocktail party last night, “you have to pinch yourself to believe where we are going and what we are about to see.” With an electric feel in the air, we continued our journey towards South Georgia. As the Endeavour headed south to one of the most beautiful places on earth, our thoughts drifted to those great explorers’ before us. Following in the footsteps of such great men as Shackleton adds a surreal sense of mystery to our adventure.

After a relatively quiet night, the moderate seas meant we were making good speed. As the day progressed the winds began to increase. A deeper understanding of what “the Boss” and his men went through ensues and increases our respect for his epic journey. The day was enjoyed in many ways; reading in the library, spending time on the bridge, bird watching. For some of our guests the actual feel of the sea was the highlight of the day; to watch the waves roll by added to our sense of adventure. We really were heading south! Throughout the day, lectures continued to wet our appetite with stories of Hillary, Fuchs and Shackleton, the abundant bird life and of South Georgia’s history. After an amusing recap and briefing on tomorrow’s activities, it was time to fall asleep with dreams of our first landing to accompany us.
