Bartolome & Santiago Island

We started our journey in the Galápagos Islands by visiting the Island of Bartolome. This small piece of land is very well known for its amazing geological formations and its wonderful landscapes. We climbed up to the summit of the island to enjoy the view of the pinnacle rock and the surrounding islands, as well. They were all brightly illuminated by the first rays of light, providing us with spectacular scenery. After breakfast, we collected our snorkeling gear and went ashore to practice some water activities. For our guests, this was the first opportunity to experience the underwater world; it was a unique chance to snorkel with white tipped reef sharks, Galápagos penguins, and large schools of surgeon fish, salemas, and grunts. There were some guests who decided to explore the southern beach on Bartolome, and headed across a gold sand dune where Pacific green sea turtles nest. Ghost crabs were also found actively working on their sand tunnels and feeding on the debris brought by the high tide.

Our visit this afternoon was on the western corner of Santiago Island known as Puerto Egas. Several decades ago there was a salt mine company, and during our walk we found some of the few abandoned structures left by the human settlement. We also experienced a refreshing light rain, considered so important at this time of the year for the benefits that brings to land birds and plants.

We returned on board and had a great time with our traditional recap, where we shared all our wonderful experiences of the day!
