At Sea

Yesterday we began our long open-ocean journey from Ushuaia, Argentina to the Canary Islands of Spain, an epic odyssey through ecosystems and evolutionary time. Colossal in scope and epic in every way, we are headed for waters few have ever seen or even dreamed about sailing. This type of oceanic crossing is a lost art; a legendary, leisurely journey sure to evoke fresh perspectives and stimulation. With 34 days ahead of us we have time to get to know more about the Atlantic Ocean, witness her moods and feel her rhythms. We will visit some of the wildest places this planet has to offer, from the more southern, wildlife-packed Falkland Islands and the Island of South Georgia, to remote outposts such as Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena and Ascension Island near the equator. We finish up in the Cape Verde Islands and end in the Canaries, so it is going to be a long haul. Everyone should be so lucky!

Such a voyage can only be imagined until one has taken the time to experience it. Those of you who are following us through these daily expedition reports will discover, along with those of us on board, what the oceanic expanses have in store for us. I am excited to be here. The days ahead are sure to be filled with excitement and wonder. I hope you will follow along with us as we cross the Atlantic in an old-fashioned way - taking our time.
