On the Sea to Ushuaia

On this fine day we steadily moved towards South America, confirmed by a brown mass of kelp floating by. Black-browed albatrosses and giant petrels sailed along in our wake. The south westerly came at us at 20 knots. In the morning Megan and Thomas were on hand to answer Oceanites’ questions. Joel gave his presentation on Energy: What to do Next?

Part of the departure from our sea, ice, mountains and especially the wildlife milieu is the closure of Arcel’s Gift Shop, and the need to pack all our belongings into what seemed to be smaller luggage.

By early afternoon, land was spotted as rugged Isla de los Estados appeared and later Tierra del Fuego in the distance. The film Around the Horn (Captain Irving Johnson) was shown. Our rolling seas were miniscule compared to the storms that the sailing ship Peking encountered. Lisa showed her dives with Robert at Carcass Island. High tea followed: beer and hot dogs. Choppy water with 30 knot winds picked as we proceeded through Le Maire Strait, and then died down.

The Lindblad Expeditions Captain's Farewell Cocktail Party had everyone dressed up and raring to go... to hear Tim congratulate everyone on a successful trip going to so many unusual places. Captain Krüse commended the crew for a job well done and talked about the good ship National Geographic Endeavour and her future.

Afterwards, our dinner included two Falkland Islands' favorites: Patagonia toothfish (certified) and lamb. As usual, chocolate ice cream was available as well as the night's dessert, strawberry mousse.

The night ended with 20 or so laptops reeling through the great photographs taken on this final trip of the NG Endeavour to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.
