Scotia Sea
Blue Blue Blue…blue skies, blue seas and blue petrels formed our outer experience today. The birds flew behind our ship coming near then far. Black–browed Albatross flew their gliding patterns along our wake. The prions and petrels gave us a run for our time trying to differentiate between various shades of gray under their fleeting chins. Fin whales blew towering stacks of exhalation as they made their presence known.
Lectures on the statistics of the Oceanites researchers, affectionately called the “penguin chicks,” gave us insight into the declining stocks of some of our favorite birds. Another lecture on krill gave us insight into the marine food web and the dependence of most Antarctic life on this one seemingly insignificant animal.
Then back outside for more chin watching (see paragraph one!).
But it was more than that. The oceans connect every continent and in doing so the ocean connects us all.
“It is a gentle and pleasant paradox that contemplating the connective, unifying power of the oceans can actually free our spirit…….It is said that where there’s life there’s hope, and no place can inspire us with more hopefulness than the great, life-making sea – that singular, wondrous ocean covering the blue planet.” – Carl Safina, Blue Ocean Institute
And it was.
