Floreana Island

After sailing all night from the west of the islands we arrive at Floreana and disembark on this mysterious island. Here we learned how many people had strived to settle and how some people had mysteriously disappeared. One of the landmarks is the Post Office Barrel that has been running since 1792, where we were able to drop off our postcards and pick up postcards left in the barrel by past visitors addressed to a place near our hometowns. This is how this free service works, no stamps are needed. The mail can be hand delivered by the visitors or they can be mailed locally once they get back.

We also went on a dinghy ride along the coast of Champion Islet and found the endangered Floreana mockingbird. We later returned to the same location to snorkel. The sea currents had brought lots of nutrients and attracted large schools of fish to the area, and the playful sea lions joined us while we explored these waters.

In the afternoon groups of kayakers set out to sea to enjoy the scenery of Cormorant Point and another group departed to swim from the beach. Later on we all went for a walk hoping to find the flamingos at the lagoon. We found three adult flamingos. They are as pink as they can be; the crustaceans they feed on have given them that strong coloration, while the single juveniles there still had pale feathers.

This has been one more spectacular day in PARADISE!
