The perfect day! The sky was blue, with great visibility and calm conditions in the ocean. Penguins were basking on the rocks, and seabirds were very active, fishing in the ocean. Early in the morning we went for a walk on a very new pahoehoe lava field at Sullivan, and later we snorkeled in a bay with penguins swimming alongside us. Pelicans were plunge-diving just a few feet away from our astonished explorers.

In the afternoon, we went to Bartolomé to snorkel from a nice beach at the foot of Pinnacle Rock, an iconic natural monument of the Galápagos. We spotted some sharks, multicolored fish, sea stars, and sea lions playing in the water. We ended the day’s magical journey with a hike to the top of a parasitic volcano to contemplate the “moonscape” and many volcanic formations. We took the chance to admire the geology of the Galápagos, a place that looks inhospitable but is magical, with unique creatures that remind us how life began on Earth.
