Ben grew up exploring the forested hills of the Finger Lakes in New York, the coastlines of British Columbia, and the Isles of Shoals in Maine. He was encouraged from an early age by his marine biologist parents to explore and examine nature. Imbued with curiosity by his parents, he spent much of his childhood in the intertidal pools of Maine and British Columbia learning about the complexity of marine life.
Ben's childhood love of exploring coastlines blossomed into a life-long love of the nature and the outdoors as well as curiosity about the natural world. He attended Cornell University where he majored in computer science, but he couldn't resist the pull of the natural world and turned to guiding and science education. He is particularly interested in ecology, marine biology, birds, and wildlife photography. However, his curiosity and love for the intertidal continues unabated.
Ben's passion has taken him to Antarctica, the Galapagos, Indonesia, Tanzania, and across the United States and Canada. When not on expeditions he can be found hiking, backpacking, and running through the coastal mountains around the San Francisco Bay Area; or exploring and kayaking on the west coast of Vancouver Island.
