Gaby Bohorquez

Naturalist

Gaby was born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Her first work in the Galapagos was on board a 90-passenger ship as the cruise director’s assistant, and she fell under the spell of the Enchanted Isles. She returned to Guayaquil to study at the Espiritu Santo Technological University to obtain a degree in Tourism Management. Her fascination for the Galapagos was still strong so, after finishing her studies, Gaby took the opportunity to join the naturalist guide’s course, jointly organized by the Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station. That was back in 1992, and she has been a naturalist since, keeping her deep passion and love for the islands during all these years.

In recent years Gaby was closely involved in the organization of a two-year conservation program, which brought international teams of volunteers to help in the eradication of aggressive introduced plants in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island which are a threat to the local ecosystems. The program was coordinated with the Charles Darwin Research Station under the approval of the National Park Service.

Gaby combines her work as a naturalist together with motherhood, teaching her children Emily (15 years old) and Danny (13 years old) to know and care about their very unique birth place. Last year Gaby, her British husband Paul and their kids moved to the United Kingdom from which she commutes back to her beloved islands several times a year.

Gaby is a certified diver, and her hobbies include watercolour painting and various arts and crafts. She also loves languages and therefore she is fluent in Spanish, English, German and French.
