John has been interested in travelling, what can be learned from it and sharing it with others, since his days as a youth growing up in rural Ohio. A graduate of Marietta College, his first SCUBA diving course in 1980 introduced him to the underwater world, and he’s been passionate about exploring it ever since. This yearning has taken him to spectacular dive sites the world over, with extensive underwater time logged in Hawaii, the Bahamas, Thailand, Greece and Mexico.
He has also explored the cold water environments of Alaska, where he worked as an environmental educator and naturalist for six years. While there he attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage, majoring in education and wilderness studies. Graduate work in human development and a teaching credential took him to the Pacific Northwest where he has made his home in the beautiful San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington state for the past decade and a half. Here he has led people of all ages, from eight to 80, on adventures all over the region as a guide and a teacher. He’s happy to be sharing his passion for Alaska’s rich natural history with other intrepid travelers.
