Brett Garner

Working across the world's oceans and polar regions, Brett combines photography, marine biology and conservation storytelling. Based in Western Australia, he specializes in underwater photography and documenting the ecological and human dimensions of marine environments.

He has worked and traveled extensively throughout the world's oceans and on all seven continents, with a particular focus on the Indo-Pacific region and the polar seas. Originally from California, Brett earned a bachelor's degree in marine biology from UCLA and a master's degree in marine biology and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

While at Scripps, he received funding from the Waitt Foundation to produce a documentary following a group of Fijian spearfishers as they navigated the challenges of conserving their reef resources. He later expanded this work through projects featuring traditional landowners in the Peruvian Amazon and nomadic fishing communities in Malaysian Borneo, documenting the relationships between local cultures and the ecosystems that support them.
Brett's work on coral bleaching and marine conservation has been widely distributed through major international publications. His photography and field experience span tropical reefs, open oceans and polar environments, providing opportunities to document both wildlife and the broader ecological changes affecting marine ecosystems.

He spends much of the year on expedition, diving in polar waters, photographing marine life and searching for seabirds in some of the world's most remote regions.
