Lynn Kaluzienski
Lynn grew up with a deep fascination for science and physics, though it took time before she discovered how to channel this passion into understanding the natural world. After earning her undergraduate degree in Physics and Astronomy from Emory University—where she studied light curves from distant stars, she made the pivotal leap into glaciology, earning her Ph.D. from the University of Maine in 2021.
Her research focuses on ice dynamics and glacier-ocean interactions, seamlessly blending numerical modeling and satellite remote sensing with extensive fieldwork in remote polar locations including Antarctica, Svalbard, and Greenland. For the past three years, she has been studying glaciers from her home base in Juneau, Alaska, investigating the fascinating interactions between glaciers and marine wildlife. Her work combines rigorous field data collection with advanced analysis to understand how glacier dynamics influence marine ecosystems.
When not analyzing glacier behavior or planning the next field season, Lynn can be found pursuing her other great passion: kayaking. She is passionate about field-based education and outreach, leading programs like Girls in Icy Fjords and the Juneau Icefield Research Program, where she guides students in understanding glacial systems and shares her excitement for the dynamic world where ice meets ocean.
