Torre Stockard

Torre's thirst for exploration was first instilled by her theatre parents, who moved the family frequently during her upbringing. Her eclectic curiosity has shaped her into a "jane of all trades", but the wonder of the natural world, particularly birds, has remained a steady passion. She earned a PhD in Marine Biology from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and went on to study the diving physiology of penguins, seals, and whales. Her varied science career has taken her from the lab bench to oceanographic research vessels, the Greenland ice sheet, and North American forests, but the highlight (so far!) has been Antarctica, where she spent six exhilarating seasons studying emperor penguins. These experiences piqued her fascination with how animals thrive in challenging environments.

Nature fuels Torre's spirit, and the search for special moments with wild creatures has inspired her travels on all seven continents. In her commitment to conservation and rewilding, she has worked on salmon recovery, beaver-engineered habitat restoration, and songbird monitoring. For added fun, she enjoys mountain biking, skate skiing, hiking, and music.

A stint at National Geographic taught her the power of storytelling, and she's delighted to have found her calling as a Naturalist, sharing her knowledge of wild things to inspire others on land and sea ventures. Torre loves to make science fun and looks forward to enhancing everyone's thrill of discovery. The more she learns, the more she feels awed by nature and its power to connect us all.
