Science at Sea: Studying Microorganisms in Antarctica with Dr. Catherine Hibeiro
Microorganisms may be invisible to the naked eye, but they form the foundation of Antarctica’s ecosystem. With support from the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Fund, oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer Dr. Catherine Hibeiro studies the microbes that sustain the region’s food webs and help regulate the planet’s climate. In this video, she shares her findings made on an expedition aboard the National Geographic Resolution, what these minuscule organisms reveal about a changing environment and why understanding them is critical to the future of Antarctica’s ecosystem.
